Mary grew up in Derby, Kansas, where she first discovered her passion for sculpture while carving wood in middle school.
After moving to San Diego in 1986, she began studying pottery at San Diego City College and continued developing her artistic skills in clay and sculpture. She currently studies clay sculpting at Spanish Village in Balboa Park.
Mrs. Houston has also exhibited three of her works at the San Diego County Fair.
